Stay Bump-to-Date! My 13 week update.

We are almost halfway through the FINAL week of the first trimester! Monday the 13th starts the second trimester- which is just insane. I don’t understand how fast the time is going. It feels like yesterday we found out we were expecting for the FIRST time, and here we are, 3 weeks away from the end of 2021 with a toddler and a 13 week fetus. It’s pretty crazy.

  • HOW FAR ALONG? 13 weeks 2 days.
  • DUE DATE? June 13th.
  • SIZE? Baby 2 is the size of a lemon! They are 3 whole inches in length from the tip of the head to the bottom of their little butt.
  • WEIGHT GAIN? I believe I have slowly begun to put weight on. They don’t really recommend you gain too much in the first trimester, however starting next week I am going to have to ramp up my food intake. 3x the fruit, 100000x the water, and lots of carbs… says me 🙂
  • NAME? We are only sharing name thoughts with family at this time 🙂
  • HOW AM I FEELING? Excited! I am cherishing my time with Emily, but I can’t wait to see her be a big sister.
  • CRAVINGS? Nothing currently. I had ice cream for the first time in months last night and it destroyed my stomach, so…
  • AVERSIONS? Chicken. I don’t want the stuff.
  • PHYSICAL CHANGES? There is a teeeeeeny bump showing down there. But it’s small. My shirts have definitely begun to get a little tight around the belly.
  • BABY MOVEMENT? Every once in a while I can feel pressure in there when it rolls around, but because the lemon is only 3 inches big, there’s not much to feel.
  • BELLY BUTTON? My belly button has been pushed a little higher than normal now that the bump has begun to grow.
  • MOST EXCITED ABOUT? Seeing Emily interact with my growing belly and eventually interact with her sibling.
  • LEAST EXCITED ABOUT? Nothing right now, to be honest. We are having another c-section, so I know what to expect.
  • PRENATAL VITAMINS? I am taking One A Day Prenatal Advanced Multivitamin with Brain Support. It has 800 mg of Folic Acid which is a very important vitamin that promotes development and growth. I am also taking a probiotic, vitamin C, D3, and B12.
  • SKINCARE? Superfood Cleanser by Youth to the People and a moisturizer by Clinique.

Stay Bump-to-Date! My 12 week update!

  • HOW FAR ALONG? 12 weeks!!!
  • DUE DATE? June 13th.
  • SIZE? Baby 2 is the size of a LIME! In the past week they have grown almost a whole inch!
  • WEIGHT GAIN? I am slowly starting to climb now. My last doctor weigh in was 164, so I would assume I am about 165-166 now.
  • NAME? We are only sharing name thoughts with family at this time 🙂
  • HOW AM I FEELING? I am feeling great. I am still a little tired during the day but I am getting my energy back. I definitely want to clean and bake all of the time.
  • CRAVINGS? Not really!
  • AVERSIONS? Chocolate. Which is a huge probe, because I love chocolate. And it’s not that I am having an AVERSION to it, it’s just my body doesn’t really want it right now.
  • PHYSICAL CHANGES? A teeeeeeeny time bump is forming. My uterus is just now starting to come up and out of my pelvis and soon it will start pushing outwards and upwards.
  • BABY MOVEMENT? It’s kicking away in there, but I won’t be able to feel it for another 8-ish weeks.
  • BELLY BUTTON? Still an innie! It stayed an innie through Em’s pregnancy so it may for this one as well.
  • MOST EXCITED ABOUT? My maternity shoot! It won’t be until the spring, but because of COVID I never got to do a maternity shoot with Emily. I am excited to incorporate her into this one.
  • LEAST EXCITED ABOUT? The third trimester. I wasn’t a huge fan of it last time.
  • PRENATAL VITAMINS? I am taking the same vitamins as last time, and have been for the past 4 months as we got ready to try again. I am taking One A Day Prenatal Advanced Multivitamin with Brain Support. It has 800 mg of Folic Acid which is a very important vitamin that promotes development and growth. I am also taking a Vitamin C, Vitamin D, and a probiotic. I also take a Gas-X when necessary, because growing a baby makes you gassy!
  • SKINCARE? I currently use the Superfood Cleanser by Youth to the People and I use a Clinique moisturizer.

Stay Bump-to-Date: My 11 week update!

It’s crazy to think that we found out we were pregnant at only 4 weeks along. That doesn’t happen to most women. If you’re trying to get pregnant, you are hyper aware of your symptoms and of course are looking for anything out of place, but if you aren’t planning on getting pregnant, you may not find out until you are 6 weeks pregnant, or you may not find out until you are 3 months pregnant!

I am grateful to have found out so early so that we can enjoy every step of the pregnancy.

We are only 3 weeks away from the second trimester! There’s a lot to happen in the next few weeks.

I have bloodwork next week for a prenatal screening. This tests for chromosomal deficiencies like Down syndrome. We also have an ultrasound next week to measure the fluid behind the baby’s spine, check the amniotic fluid, and measure the bridge of the nose. These again are all signs of genetic disorders that could affect the value of life for the fetus, so it’s important that these both happen between the 12th and 14th week of pregnancy.

  • HOW FAR ALONG? 11 weeks 2 days
  • DUE DATE? June 13th.
  • SIZE? Baby 2 is the size of a large strawberry, about 1.5 inches from head to butt.
  • WEIGHT GAIN? I lost a few pounds halfway through the first trimester but I have been slowly putting the weight back on. If this pregnancy is anything like my last, I should gain about 20 pounds overall.
  • NAME? We are only sharing name thoughts with family at this time 🙂
  • HOW AM I FEELING? Exhausted. Absolutely exhausted. My nausea has subsided but every day I feel drained around lunch time. Luckily when my MIL is here I’m able to sneak a quick 30 min nap in, and when she’s not here I’ll try to nap when Em is napping.
  • CRAVINGS? The other day I ate an entire bag of cheez doodles, so…
  • AVERSIONS? Meat, honestly. I just don’t want it. I’m fine with ground beef and things like that but I don’t want a full chicken breast or a steak.
  • PHYSICAL CHANGES? The tiniest of bumps is appearing, and my face has thinned out much like last time.
  • BABY MOVEMENT? None that we can feel! I won’t be able to feel fluttering for another 5 weeks at least.
  • BELLY BUTTON? These questions are getting silly! No physical changes yet 🙂
  • MOST EXCITED ABOUT? Watching Emily’s interaction with my belly as it continues to grow. I don’t believe she will understand too much what is happening, but she may understand the words “baby” and “tummy”. I will be working hard to make sure the transition from one to two is easy on Miss Emily. Also, Connor gets an AMAZING paternity leave, giving us most of the summer to enjoy our new family addition.
  • LEAST EXCITED ABOUT? Nothing right now. Maybe the lack of sleep or the having to treat the new baby like a porcelain doll. But those will pass!
  • PRENATAL VITAMINS? I am taking the same vitamins as last time, and have been for the past 4 months as we got ready to try again. I am taking One A Day Prenatal Advanced Multivitamin with Brain Support. It has 800 mg of Folic Acid which is a very important vitamin that promotes development and growth. I am also taking Vitamin C, a probiotic, and Vitamin D3. Having most of my pregnancy during the winter will be a little tough, especially with the lack of walking outside/sunlight I will be getting, so the D3 is a great supplement. I also don’t drink cows milk, so the extra vitamin D will help my own bones as I grow another human. I should also start taking B6 which is great for pregnancy.
  • SKINCARE? I am looking for new skincare, but currently I use a Neutrogena face wash. I think I am going to go back to the Superfood Cleanser by Youth to the People.
  • WORKOUT? I am trying to at least get a 20-30 min walk in every day. It’s hard working full time, and I am also so tired that just that walk exerts so much energy that I want to sleep for a year afterwards. Hopefully in a few weeks I will have enough energy to walk every day and maybe do some yoga at night or during Emily’s naps.

We’re Expecting… Again!

Holy shit. HOLY SHIT. We are PREGNANT!

I cannot believe it. I mean… alright. Here is the tea.

Connor and I REALLY wanted to start trying to have another kid. We love Emily, we love watching her grow and learn and develop, however we were craving the newborn phase again. TikTok- screw you for choosing the baby algorithm for our pages.

We knew that getting pregnant could take 6 months to a year for healthy and actively trying couples, so we began trying in July. Well… June. But I became to stressed with tracking my ovulation and planning sex, that we took a step back.

We decided that I would continue to take ovulation tests around when I would ovulate and I would track my cycle in the Flo app. I have been using the Flo app for years as a way to track my cycle and my sex life, and it was truly coming in handy this time. Back in May, I began tracking my ovulation. We knew we wanted to start trying soon for another baby, and we believed this was the best way.

I quickly became stressed and overwhelmed with tracking my cycle so rigidly and planning the exact minute we would have sex. It took the fun and the romance out of our sex life, and it made us both pissy and annoyed. We took a break and decided to just try without trying- meaning we would not use protection and we would ramp up around the time I should be ovulating.

For my own women’s health knowledge, I continued to track my cycle, as it had been wonky since getting it back after breastfeeding. I used to not spot at all before I got my period, and I would just wake up with it full force every 4th Monday. Now, I was spotting on Saturday and sometimes not getting my period for 3-4 days after. So I knew that tracking my ovulation would help me figure out what was going on inside my body.

We went through July and August having sex around ovulation, right when I received a positive ovulation test. Of course when you receive a positive ovulation test, that doesn’t mean you are ovulating that very second. That just means your LH hormones (luteinizing hormones) are at their highest and that you will ovulate a day or two following.

September was different. We knew when I would be ovulating, but I hadn’t taken an ovulation test yet. I came home on the 16th from getting my hair done and Connor had set up scented candles in the back room, so I knew what was going down.

Fast forward only about a week. I noticed my body odor was a little off. I never woke up really smelling, but I began waking in the morning and IMMEDIATELY needing a shower. I noticed that my discharge was super watery, and I began having a bad taste in my mouth. Then the day after Emily’s first birthday, I woke up with horrible nausea.

I know how pregnancy tests work, and I know I was taking them too early to register ANYTHING, but I took 5 pregnancy tests between September 20-September 28. All negative, obviously. Your mind makes you freak out, okay?

Friday morning I woke up, again, nauseous as all heck. I had work and a Dr. appt for Emily, so I just swallowed the feeling and went about my morning. After we got back home, I began gathering the ingredients for her cake for her birthday party. I felt like I was going to vomit right there, so I ran to the bathroom and took the last pregnancy test I had- the Clearblue Digital test. The test didn’t even wait the full 3-4 minutes. DING DING DING. PREGNANT!

Wow. Needless to say, we were shocked (even though we haddddd been trying). I scooped up Em and ran downstairs to Connor to tell him the news. I gave him the test and he said “Thank you. What is this? Are you pregnant?” So already the reaction was much better than waking him up at 8:30 in the morning to tell him we were pregnant with Emily.

We are absolutely ecstatic. We are still a tiny bit in shock, but that is par for the course when expecting a new baby, especially after you receive a positive test 2 days after your daughter turned 1.

I am now 11 weeks pregnant, we have told the world, and now we get to sit back and wait until June for our newest addition to arrive.

Stay Bump-to-Date! My 38 WEEK Bumpdate

38 Weeks Pregnant

Happy FULL TERM to our baby girl! We are officially in the, “Okay, you can come any time now!” stage. We both think we jinxed her early arrival by speculating about it so much- we are now fully expecting her to show up AFTER her due date (and probably close to my own birthday!).

^^^I wrote that yesterday, before my appointment. At the doctors today (Tuesday), he said that I am 1cm dilated and Emily’s head is very low. The effacement (how low her head is in my cervix) is the MOST important, as that shows that labor is imminent. Dilation can go from 0-10 overnight…. there is a high high chance we could be welcoming a baby this week!

  • HOW FAR ALONG? 38 weeks and 4 days!
  • DUE DATE? September 19th, but the doctor said to get ready…
  • SIZE?: About 7lbs, possibly a few ounces over.
  • WEIGHT GAIN? I gained back my weight from last week +one. I weighed in at 165 this week! My uterus, baby, placenta, and fluid take up 90% of that weight.
  • NAME? Emily Ruth Whiteley ❤
  • HOW AM I FEELING?: Energized! From last week to this week I have felt a POWER SURGE of energy. On Sunday, we deep cleaned the entire house (something we haven’t done in literal months). It was so nice to get the house all ready for Emily’s arrival! Today, I hit a wall of exhaustion. I think she’s finally getting ready to pop!
  • CRAVINGS?: Poptarts… which I forgot to pick up from the grocery store today.
  • AVERSIONS?: None!
  • PHYSICAL CHANGES?: More red stretch marks on my belly and sides. I didn’t start getting them on my belly until her big weight gain and until she turned upside-down, but they are certainly there now!
  • BABY MOVEMENT?: I seriously thought she would have stopped by now, but nooooo. Saturday and Sunday she was moving like she was 30 weeks and not about to come out.
  • BELLY BUTTON?: Flat flat flat.
  • MOST EXCITED ABOUT?: Getting this baby out of me!
  • LEAST EXCITED ABOUT?: Getting this baby out of me.

8 Second Trimester Must-Haves

As I begin to close out my second trimester, I have started reflecting on the last 3 months. So many amazing things happened! We saw our baby move for the first time, we moved across the country (with all our belongings, 2 cars, and 2 cats) to start our life on the east coast, and we got married. What?! It’s so hard to believe that all of this happened in the last 13 weeks.

Looking back on what was an amazing time, I pinpointed moments where I thought, “Hey, I could have used more of this” or “I wish I knew how much I would need that”. I know now I will be extra prepared for baby #2 (when that comes along).

I created a list of second trimester MUST HAVES for moms currently pregnant or trying to get pregnant. Hopefully, this will ease your mind a bit when making those mid-afternoon Target runs.

1. All of the dresses

Seriously! You want to stock your closet with dresses, especially if you are going to be pregnant during the late spring/summer months. I don’t think I have ever owned as many dresses as I do now. Your second trimester is when your bump really starts to take off, and people will stop wondering if you just had that extra large pizza for lunch. Some women prefer loose, t-shirt style dresses, while I prefer the more form-fitting ones (I like showing off my bump). Either way, dresses are going to be much more comfortable than jeans and shorts ever will. My favorite dresses come from Amazon and Target. You can actually find them in my latest post, What’s a Mom to Wear?

2. Comfortable shoes

Before pregnancy, I took all of my footwear for granted. Being in theater and being on my feet all of the time, you would think I would have learned that shoes are the most important part of your wardrobe, and they certainly were for me!… except I wore heels 80% of the time. Now that my feet and ankles are starting to slightly swell, I have begun leaning more towards shoes such as Keds or Blowfish. They are both two really great brands that include memory foam insoles and are just really comfortable to wear whether you’re going to the grocery store or going for a walk up and down the street.

3. dōTERRA Deep Blue® Rub

This back cream has been a LIVE SAVER throughout my pregnancy, but certainly throughout the second trimester. dōTERRA Deep Blue® Rub is infused with essential oils such as Wintergreen, Peppermint, Blue Chamomile, and more. It penetrates the muscles and leaves your skin tingling after application. This is the perfect cream to have my husband (willingly) rub on my lower back at bedtime, as it helps loosen up the muscles and allow any small knots to work themselves out during my sleep. 10/10 will ALWAYS recommend.

4. Snacks on snacks on snacks

Easy Cheese

Pregnancy cravings. Don’t let anyone fool you… they are REAL! During the past few weeks, my cravings have been few and far between, but once something is mentioned that I want, I can’t get my mind off of it until it is in my stomach. A few weeks ago, while watching Guy’s Grocery Games, the contestants were challenged to use canned spray cheese in their dish. You know- the disgusting, fake, amazingly delicious cheddar cheese spray from our childhood. I could not get it out of my head until this past week when my mother and sister came to visit and brought 2 cans of that ooey goodness with them. Thanks, guys!

5. A Meal Delivery Service

While I love going to the grocery store as much as the next person, I don’t necessarily want to cook all of the food I buy. It’s difficult to find the right meals for dinner and to have to go to the store and try to find each and every individual ingredient to make that dish. More often than not, these meals will take well over an hour to make. We found solace in HelloFresh. HelloFresh is a meal kit delivery service that is customizable to your lifestyle AND your budget. A normal week for us (a family plan with 3 meals at 2 servings a piece) is roughly $60 per week. We are able to remove and add meals as we please, dependant on what is being offered that week. We also have the ability to skip as many weeks in a row as week want. This is perfect for weeks where we are traveling a lot or weeks where we would rather be grilling and hanging out outside. HelloFresh has been the perfect way to introduce new and easy meals into our lives as we prepare to feed what we assume will be a very fussy baby.

6. Pregnancy Pillows

I will be the first one to admit that I took pregnancy pillows for granted. My mother tried to buy me one near the end of my first trimester, but I declined, saying that I didn’t need one. Once I wasn’t able to sleep on my stomach or my back anymore, having a king0sized pillow in between my legs or up against my back became necessary. Putting the pillow in between my legs allowed the pressure to be taken off of my lower back and gave comfort to my knees. Having the king-sized pillow at my front allowed me to curl up against something other than my husband, who doesn’t like to cuddle during sleep. While I only have a large pillow for this pregnancy, I will be investing in a pregnancy pillow for my second.

7. Water

That’s it. Just water. Stay hydrated, mama!

8. A hobby

Dealing with both unemployment and a pandemic during my pregnancy hasn’t been easy. With a husband who goes into work every day (lucky duck, he is), I needed something to entertain myself. I have picked back up my love of painting during the last few months, and this has been a wonderful way to express some creativity as well as pass the time during the day. I also do a LOT of house work. Dishes, laundry, the works. Find a hobby that you love, whether it be a long, forgotten one, or a brand new one!

I am excited to enter the third trimester. I am looking forward to the next leg of this journey, and the next 3 months until we get to meet our baby girl.

What’s a Mom to Wear?

Never in a million years would I have thought that my maternity wardrobe would be the most important wardrobe I have!

I’ll admit, I got a little finger trigger happy early on in my pregnancy and bought maternity clothes when I certainly didn’t need them yet. Being a first time mom, I expected my stomach to balloon up within the first 2 months, and I ordered just like that. In truth, I didn’t start getting a real pregnancy belly until about week 16 or 17, 4 months into my pregnancy.

Now, don’t get me wrong. I wore the tiny crap out of those maternity clothes! I wear them even better now that there is a belly to fill those shirts and dresses.

I spent a lot of time choosing maternity clothes and exploring different websites for the best clothes AND the best deals. But let’s be real… if it’s cute, I’m buying it!

When shopping for any wardrobe, it’s important to keep the must-haves in mind. Many people call this a “capsule wardrobe“. If you are a shopaholic like me, this helps to clear our your wardrobe while only keeping the essentials, and keeping items that you can mix and match every day of the week.

I LOVE clothes. Like, love! I have always been one to shop high-end at low-budget stores (Target, Kohls, and sometimes even WalMart). I found it very difficult at the beginning of ny pregnancy to find maternity clothing that was both hella cute and hella affordable. I scoured the internet trying to find outfits that I could wear both throughout the 7 more months of my pregnancy and postpartum. I am ALL for versitile!

The first website I stumbled upon was Motherhood Maternity. Motherhood ofers a wide variety of maternity fashion, but it really hits home with the basics. I was able to get some amazing Secret Fit Belly jeans and jeggings, nursing bras (which are the most comfortable bras I have EVER worn), Graphic Tees, and Scooped Neck Maternity Tank Tops for a very inexpensive price. As I was searching for clothes a little higher priced, I found Pink Blush. Pink Blush is AMAZING because they not only have a plethora of maternity clothes, but they also have a section for non-pregnant women. Their clothes are perfect for during pregnancy and after, so I know that they will get the proper use out of them. Pink Blush is great for baby shower dresses and flowy, patterened pants. I even got the dress I got married in from Pink Blush! Check out the gallery below for photos of my favorite Pink Blush items!

Now that I had a few basics and a few special occasion picks out of the way, it was time to get the clothes that would get me through the hot New England summer- clothes that would be able to be easy to put on, versitile, be used after pregnancy, but still retain their cuteness. I went to Target and Amazon for those picks. It took a bit of sleuthing to find, but the simple, side-rouched dresses as these two stores were PERFECT and were exactly what I was looking for. Amazon had a dress that came in over 20 different patterns and colors, so you know I stocked up on those. I paired these simple dresses with some crop tops I found on Amazon, just to give it that extra touch. Target had great dresses with the same fit and feel, but ones that I wasn’t able to find on Amazon. Check out the gallery below for photos of my favorite Target and Amazon dresses!

Now is time for the most important part- shoes! Finding the right pregnancy shoe is like finding a needle in a haystack. Halfway through the second trimester, your feet start to ache and swell from all of the blood rushing through your veins, and when going on those long pregnancy walks, it’s important to make sure your feet are taken care of. My mother recommended Blowfish! Blowfish is a California-based footwear company whose main goals are creating shoes that are both comfortable and affordable. They draw inspiration from European and Asian culture and combine that with creativity to create their shoes. My go-to shoe is the Marley It comes in almost 20 different colors, and features elastic and canvas to make your feet feel like they aren’t even wearing shoes!

Don’t Kick the Bucket List!

A Bucket List isn’t just a popular movie with Morgan Freeman and Jack Nicholson. A bucket list is a list of things you want to accomplish before you, well, kick the bucket! The term “bucket list” hasn’t been around very long, assuming to have been coined by screenwriter Justin Zackham for the 2007 film of the same name.

There is not just one kind of bucket list! The most popular ones are for travel, ex. visit all 50 states (certainly one of mine), but there are also bucket lists for learning new skills, trying new foods, milestones in life, and more. You can check out other bucket lists online, such as this one here, or you can be 100% creative and write up your own.
