Stay Bump-to-Date! My 13 week update.

We are almost halfway through the FINAL week of the first trimester! Monday the 13th starts the second trimester- which is just insane. I don’t understand how fast the time is going. It feels like yesterday we found out we were expecting for the FIRST time, and here we are, 3 weeks away from the end of 2021 with a toddler and a 13 week fetus. It’s pretty crazy.

  • HOW FAR ALONG? 13 weeks 2 days.
  • DUE DATE? June 13th.
  • SIZE? Baby 2 is the size of a lemon! They are 3 whole inches in length from the tip of the head to the bottom of their little butt.
  • WEIGHT GAIN? I believe I have slowly begun to put weight on. They don’t really recommend you gain too much in the first trimester, however starting next week I am going to have to ramp up my food intake. 3x the fruit, 100000x the water, and lots of carbs… says me 🙂
  • NAME? We are only sharing name thoughts with family at this time 🙂
  • HOW AM I FEELING? Excited! I am cherishing my time with Emily, but I can’t wait to see her be a big sister.
  • CRAVINGS? Nothing currently. I had ice cream for the first time in months last night and it destroyed my stomach, so…
  • AVERSIONS? Chicken. I don’t want the stuff.
  • PHYSICAL CHANGES? There is a teeeeeeny bump showing down there. But it’s small. My shirts have definitely begun to get a little tight around the belly.
  • BABY MOVEMENT? Every once in a while I can feel pressure in there when it rolls around, but because the lemon is only 3 inches big, there’s not much to feel.
  • BELLY BUTTON? My belly button has been pushed a little higher than normal now that the bump has begun to grow.
  • MOST EXCITED ABOUT? Seeing Emily interact with my growing belly and eventually interact with her sibling.
  • LEAST EXCITED ABOUT? Nothing right now, to be honest. We are having another c-section, so I know what to expect.
  • PRENATAL VITAMINS? I am taking One A Day Prenatal Advanced Multivitamin with Brain Support. It has 800 mg of Folic Acid which is a very important vitamin that promotes development and growth. I am also taking a probiotic, vitamin C, D3, and B12.
  • SKINCARE? Superfood Cleanser by Youth to the People and a moisturizer by Clinique.

Stay Bump-to-Date! My 12 week update!

  • HOW FAR ALONG? 12 weeks!!!
  • DUE DATE? June 13th.
  • SIZE? Baby 2 is the size of a LIME! In the past week they have grown almost a whole inch!
  • WEIGHT GAIN? I am slowly starting to climb now. My last doctor weigh in was 164, so I would assume I am about 165-166 now.
  • NAME? We are only sharing name thoughts with family at this time 🙂
  • HOW AM I FEELING? I am feeling great. I am still a little tired during the day but I am getting my energy back. I definitely want to clean and bake all of the time.
  • CRAVINGS? Not really!
  • AVERSIONS? Chocolate. Which is a huge probe, because I love chocolate. And it’s not that I am having an AVERSION to it, it’s just my body doesn’t really want it right now.
  • PHYSICAL CHANGES? A teeeeeeeny time bump is forming. My uterus is just now starting to come up and out of my pelvis and soon it will start pushing outwards and upwards.
  • BABY MOVEMENT? It’s kicking away in there, but I won’t be able to feel it for another 8-ish weeks.
  • BELLY BUTTON? Still an innie! It stayed an innie through Em’s pregnancy so it may for this one as well.
  • MOST EXCITED ABOUT? My maternity shoot! It won’t be until the spring, but because of COVID I never got to do a maternity shoot with Emily. I am excited to incorporate her into this one.
  • LEAST EXCITED ABOUT? The third trimester. I wasn’t a huge fan of it last time.
  • PRENATAL VITAMINS? I am taking the same vitamins as last time, and have been for the past 4 months as we got ready to try again. I am taking One A Day Prenatal Advanced Multivitamin with Brain Support. It has 800 mg of Folic Acid which is a very important vitamin that promotes development and growth. I am also taking a Vitamin C, Vitamin D, and a probiotic. I also take a Gas-X when necessary, because growing a baby makes you gassy!
  • SKINCARE? I currently use the Superfood Cleanser by Youth to the People and I use a Clinique moisturizer.

Stay Bump-to-Date: My 11 week update!

It’s crazy to think that we found out we were pregnant at only 4 weeks along. That doesn’t happen to most women. If you’re trying to get pregnant, you are hyper aware of your symptoms and of course are looking for anything out of place, but if you aren’t planning on getting pregnant, you may not find out until you are 6 weeks pregnant, or you may not find out until you are 3 months pregnant!

I am grateful to have found out so early so that we can enjoy every step of the pregnancy.

We are only 3 weeks away from the second trimester! There’s a lot to happen in the next few weeks.

I have bloodwork next week for a prenatal screening. This tests for chromosomal deficiencies like Down syndrome. We also have an ultrasound next week to measure the fluid behind the baby’s spine, check the amniotic fluid, and measure the bridge of the nose. These again are all signs of genetic disorders that could affect the value of life for the fetus, so it’s important that these both happen between the 12th and 14th week of pregnancy.

  • HOW FAR ALONG? 11 weeks 2 days
  • DUE DATE? June 13th.
  • SIZE? Baby 2 is the size of a large strawberry, about 1.5 inches from head to butt.
  • WEIGHT GAIN? I lost a few pounds halfway through the first trimester but I have been slowly putting the weight back on. If this pregnancy is anything like my last, I should gain about 20 pounds overall.
  • NAME? We are only sharing name thoughts with family at this time 🙂
  • HOW AM I FEELING? Exhausted. Absolutely exhausted. My nausea has subsided but every day I feel drained around lunch time. Luckily when my MIL is here I’m able to sneak a quick 30 min nap in, and when she’s not here I’ll try to nap when Em is napping.
  • CRAVINGS? The other day I ate an entire bag of cheez doodles, so…
  • AVERSIONS? Meat, honestly. I just don’t want it. I’m fine with ground beef and things like that but I don’t want a full chicken breast or a steak.
  • PHYSICAL CHANGES? The tiniest of bumps is appearing, and my face has thinned out much like last time.
  • BABY MOVEMENT? None that we can feel! I won’t be able to feel fluttering for another 5 weeks at least.
  • BELLY BUTTON? These questions are getting silly! No physical changes yet 🙂
  • MOST EXCITED ABOUT? Watching Emily’s interaction with my belly as it continues to grow. I don’t believe she will understand too much what is happening, but she may understand the words “baby” and “tummy”. I will be working hard to make sure the transition from one to two is easy on Miss Emily. Also, Connor gets an AMAZING paternity leave, giving us most of the summer to enjoy our new family addition.
  • LEAST EXCITED ABOUT? Nothing right now. Maybe the lack of sleep or the having to treat the new baby like a porcelain doll. But those will pass!
I am also taking Vitamin C, a probiotic, and Vitamin D3. Having most of my pregnancy during the winter will be a little tough, especially with the lack of walking outside/sunlight I will be getting, so the D3 is a great supplement. I also don’t drink cows milk, so the extra vitamin D will help my own bones as I grow another human. I should also start taking B6 which is great for pregnancy.
  • SKINCARE? I am looking for new skincare, but currently I use a Neutrogena face wash. I think I am going to go back to the Superfood Cleanser by Youth to the People.
  • WORKOUT? I am trying to at least get a 20-30 min walk in every day. It’s hard working full time, and I am also so tired that just that walk exerts so much energy that I want to sleep for a year afterwards. Hopefully in a few weeks I will have enough energy to walk every day and maybe do some yoga at night or during Emily’s naps.

Thank you for following along pregnancy #2!

We’re Expecting… Again!

Holy shit. HOLY SHIT. We are PREGNANT!

I cannot believe it. I mean… alright. Here is the tea.

Connor and I REALLY wanted to start trying to have another kid. We love Emily, we love watching her grow and learn and develop, however we were craving the newborn phase again. TikTok- screw you for choosing the baby algorithm for our pages.

We knew that getting pregnant could take 6 months to a year for healthy and actively trying couples, so we began trying in July. Well… June. But I became to stressed with tracking my ovulation and planning sex, that we took a step back.

We decided that I would continue to take ovulation tests around when I would ovulate and I would track my cycle in the Flo app. I have been using the Flo app for years as a way to track my cycle and my sex life, and it was truly coming in handy this time. Back in May, I began tracking my ovulation. We knew we wanted to start trying soon for another baby, and we believed this was the best way.

I quickly became stressed and overwhelmed with tracking my cycle so rigidly and planning the exact minute we would have sex. It took the fun and the romance out of our sex life, and it made us both pissy and annoyed. We took a break and decided to just try without trying- meaning we would not use protection and we would ramp up around the time I should be ovulating.

For my own women’s health knowledge, I continued to track my cycle, as it had been wonky since getting it back after breastfeeding. I used to not spot at all before I got my period, and I would just wake up with it full force every 4th Monday. Now, I was spotting on Saturday and sometimes not getting my period for 3-4 days after. So I knew that tracking my ovulation would help me figure out what was going on inside my body.

We went through July and August having sex around ovulation, right when I received a positive ovulation test. Of course when you receive a positive ovulation test, that doesn’t mean you are ovulating that very second. That just means your LH hormones (luteinizing hormones) are at their highest and that you will ovulate a day or two following.

September was different. We knew when I would be ovulating, but I hadn’t taken an ovulation test yet. I came home on the 16th from getting my hair done and Connor had set up scented candles in the back room, so I knew what was going down.

Fast forward only about a week. I noticed my body odor was a little off. I never woke up really smelling, but I began waking in the morning and IMMEDIATELY needing a shower. I noticed that my discharge was super watery, and I began having a bad taste in my mouth. Then the day after Emily’s first birthday, I woke up with horrible nausea.

I know how pregnancy tests work, and I know I was taking them too early to register ANYTHING, but I took 5 pregnancy tests between September 20-September 28. All negative, obviously. Your mind makes you freak out, okay?

Friday morning I woke up, again, nauseous as all heck. I had work and a Dr. appt for Emily, so I just swallowed the feeling and went about my morning. After we got back home, I began gathering the ingredients for her cake for her birthday party. I felt like I was going to vomit right there, so I ran to the bathroom and took the last pregnancy test I had- the Clearblue Digital test. The test didn’t even wait the full 3-4 minutes. DING DING DING. PREGNANT!

Wow. Needless to say, we were shocked (even though we haddddd been trying). I scooped up Em and ran downstairs to Connor to tell him the news. I gave him the test and he said “Thank you. What is this? Are you pregnant?” So already the reaction was much better than waking him up at 8:30 in the morning to tell him we were pregnant with Emily.

We are absolutely ecstatic. We are still a tiny bit in shock, but that is par for the course when expecting a new baby, especially after you receive a positive test 2 days after your daughter turned 1.

I am now 11 weeks pregnant, we have told the world, and now we get to sit back and wait until June for our newest addition to arrive.

We are so excited!

The first 5 positive pregnancy tests I took (the first was the Clearblue digital).

I took 2 more 3 days later just to be sure.
Emily is excited, as you can tell.

Stay Bump-to-Date! My 40 Week Bumpdate

40 Weeks Pregnant

Who would have thunk that we would be here? 40 weeks and 3 days pregnant! Emily is just too comfortable in there.

I had my 40+ week appointment yesterday with my wonderful OB in Westport, and everything went swimmingly… except there is still no baby, haha! Emily is a healthy and tiny little baby. She was sucking her thumb during the entire ultrasound. She is the CUTEST THING and I just can’t wait to see her outside of a (very well done) 3D image.

3D Ultrasound 40 weeks 2 days

We have our fingers crossed that I go into labor naturally this week, but if that doesn’t happen, I will get induced late next week. There is a chance we will have an October baby!

  • HOW FAR ALONG? 40 weeks and 2 days!
  • DUE DATE? September 19th was her due date- we clearly passed that! She WILL however be here within the next 10 days, whether naturally or with a little help from our friend Pitocin.
  • SIZE?: Emily is the size of a small pumpkin! Her ultrasound yesterday put her at around 6lb 12oz! A tiny, tiny little nugget.
  • WEIGHT GAIN? Hanging around 168! In total I gained 18lbs this pregnancy.
  • NAME? Emily Ruth Whiteley ❤
  • HOW AM I FEELING?: Anxious. Impatient. Energetic. All of the emotions!
  • CRAVINGS?: Chocolate Fudge Poptarts. Pickles. Salt and Vinegar chips. 7 layer dip but without the beans, lettuce, and olive… so 4 layer dip. Really just guacamole.
  • AVERSIONS?: Honestly everything, even the above. My stomach has been totally messed up the past few weeks.
  • PHYSICAL CHANGES?: Just more stretch marks! Another new discovery this week- my hair has gained a lotttttt of blonde in it these past 9 months.
  • BABY MOVEMENT?: Emily goes back and forth with her movements. She has turned to just small kicks and rolls during the day, with her dance moves spiking between 6pm-10pm. She clearly has a schedule down… but is it the schedule mommy and daddy want?
  • BELLY BUTTON?: Flat flat flat- except when she curls up. Then you can grab it. It’s gross, lol!
  • MOST EXCITED ABOUT?: Learning and growing as parents with Connor. Having a baby is something that you can’t 100% prepare for… you learn as you go with your partner and your child.
  • LEAST EXCITED ABOUT?: Right now? Nothing. I am just taking one day at a time and relishing in the fact that I am having a child with the man I love.
  • PRENATAL VITAMINS?: I am taking One A Day Women’s Prenatal Advanced Multivitamin with Brain Support. They’re great! There is a separate vitamin for Folic Acid, an important Vitamin B that promotes cell development and growth. You can find these on Amazon here!
  • SKINCARE?: I have naturally veryyyy oily skin. For the first 6 months of pregnancy, my skin cleared up of any oils and acne. It was amazing! Once I hit the third trimester, my skin decided to revolt. My pores became clogged again, my skin was slick, and I didn’t know how to combat it. My sister turned me onto these products:
    • Youth to the People Superfood Antioxidant Cleanser. This cleanser from Sephora is a GAME CHANGER! 1. It smells heavenly. 2. The formula of the cleanser makes my skin soft and leaves off the oils for hours. My skin already feels cleaner after using it for only a few weeks. I use it in the morning and pair it with…
    • CeraVé Daily Moisturizing Lotion. This moisturizer brings back color and life into my skin. It’s not heavy and absorbs right into your pores for a healthy glow.
    • At night, I use CeraVé Hydrating Facial Cleanser. This cleanser helps get all of the first and grime from throughout the day off of my face. It’s the perfect cleanser for the evening as it assists in taking off makeup, AND it’s fragrance free!
  • SUPPLEMENTS?: I have recently partnered with Mary Ruth Organics! I began taking their Vitamin C supplements (orange and vanilla flavored) once per day. Vitamin C is found in various types of food, but is very commonly used as a supplement during cold and flu season. I usually take a vitamin C pill supplement when sick, but have recently begun using Mary Ruth Organics. Note: Mary Ruth Organics are not verified by the Food and Drug Administration. Their products are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

We are officially OVERDUE! Fingers crossed she arrives naturally this week ❤

Stay Bump-to-Date! My 39 Week Bumpdate

39.5 Weeks Pregnant

Well, no baby yet! We are still a few days away from Emily’s due date, so there is no surprise that she hasn’t made her grand arrival yet.

  • HOW FAR ALONG? 39 weeks and 3 days!
  • DUE DATE? September 19th… only 4 days away!!! Will she actually come on time?
  • SIZE?: Between 7-8lbs!
  • WEIGHT GAIN? I am settled around 165.5 this week. Emily’s weight gain is slowing down as we near her eviction from my womb!
  • NAME? Emily Ruth Whiteley ❤
  • HOW AM I FEELING?: Frustrated, honestly. Even though we are 4 days out from her due date, and she could still come at any day, I am frustrated that I am not as dilated or far along as I thought I would be. This being my first pregnancy and me being a literal poster-woman for pregnancy, I understand why it is taking my body longer than I expected. Aside from feeling frustrated, I have a TON of energy which has been awesome for my nesting!! “Nesting, or the nesting instinct, is a burst of energy women often get in the last few weeks of pregnancy that inspires them to clean and organize the house in preparation for baby’s arrival.”
  • CRAVINGS?: Today my cravings have been through the roof. Feeling emotional after my appointment led me to buy the following items from the grocery store: pumpkin pie, pumpkin donuts, cookie dough, biscuits, goldfish, homemade pizza, Oreos… you get the point.
  • AVERSIONS?: This week it has been apples, peanut butter, and hot dogs. My normal diet has been flipped upside down!
  • PHYSICAL CHANGES?: A bigger belly and more stretch marks! I have learned through this pregnancy to appreciate this body of mine. I have also developed an upset tummy this week which has found me in the bathroom more than I wanted to be.
  • BABY MOVEMENT?: Seriously, girl, stop moving so much! She actually kept me up last Friday from moving so much. Her music keeps her going, and she moves and grooves when it’s meal time.
  • BELLY BUTTON?: Flat flat flat- except when she curls up. Then you can grab it. It’s gross, lol!
  • MOST EXCITED ABOUT?: Meeting our daughter. It has been a longgggg 9 months. BUT there is an end in sight!
  • LEAST EXCITED ABOUT?: The possibility of induction or c-section. I was planning on a natural birth in the hospital, but with the slow rate my body is preparing for her birth, we are leaning more towards the other options. I know that all ways of birth are BIRTH. There is no right or wrong way to bring your child into the world, as long as they come out healthy.
4 DAYS out from her due date! I can’t believe it! Regardless of when she comes (tomorrow, this weekend, or in 2 weeks from now), she will be perfect!

Stay Bump-to-Date! My 38 WEEK Bumpdate

38 Weeks Pregnant

Happy FULL TERM to our baby girl! We are officially in the, “Okay, you can come any time now!” stage. We both think we jinxed her early arrival by speculating about it so much- we are now fully expecting her to show up AFTER her due date (and probably close to my own birthday!).

^^^I wrote that yesterday, before my appointment. At the doctors today (Tuesday), he said that I am 1cm dilated and Emily’s head is very low. The effacement (how low her head is in my cervix) is the MOST important, as that shows that labor is imminent. Dilation can go from 0-10 overnight…. there is a high high chance we could be welcoming a baby this week!

  • HOW FAR ALONG? 38 weeks and 4 days!
  • DUE DATE? September 19th, but the doctor said to get ready…
  • SIZE?: About 7lbs, possibly a few ounces over.
  • WEIGHT GAIN? I gained back my weight from last week +one. I weighed in at 165 this week! My uterus, baby, placenta, and fluid take up 90% of that weight.
  • NAME? Emily Ruth Whiteley ❤
  • HOW AM I FEELING?: Energized! From last week to this week I have felt a POWER SURGE of energy. On Sunday, we deep cleaned the entire house (something we haven’t done in literal months). It was so nice to get the house all ready for Emily’s arrival! Today, I hit a wall of exhaustion. I think she’s finally getting ready to pop!
  • CRAVINGS?: Poptarts… which I forgot to pick up from the grocery store today.
  • AVERSIONS?: None!
  • PHYSICAL CHANGES?: More red stretch marks on my belly and sides. I didn’t start getting them on my belly until her big weight gain and until she turned upside-down, but they are certainly there now!
  • BABY MOVEMENT?: I seriously thought she would have stopped by now, but nooooo. Saturday and Sunday she was moving like she was 30 weeks and not about to come out.
  • BELLY BUTTON?: Flat flat flat.
  • MOST EXCITED ABOUT?: Getting this baby out of me!
  • LEAST EXCITED ABOUT?: Getting this baby out of me.

1.5 weeks out from her due date… any guesses on when she will show up???

Stay Bump-to-Date! My 37 Week Bumpdate

37 Weeks Pregnant

Holy Moly! 37 weeks pregnant. We are so freaking close to meeting Emily.

This past week I have felt so many changes in my body. My back has begun to hurt more in different places as my uterus begins to pull down. The upper part of my belly also hurts, giving me a stinging sensation. I had my first full contraction last night, which I have learned means absolutely nothing. My dilation has not progressed since last week, so we are still sitting at about .5cm dilated with 0 effacement. This isn’t a bad thing! It just means that Emily is comfy cozy inside her home. I wish she could be comfy cozy in her bassinet, but we have a few more weeks until that happens.

Connor has officially begun his WFH (work from home) stint! Unfortunately someone in his company contracted Covid-19 2 weeks ago, so everyone is WFH, but this means he will be home well through Emily’s arrival. Side note: we are 100% fine, no symptoms, and feel GREAT besides the pregnancy. It’s nice being able to look over into the study and see him working hard at our desk, and it’s equally as nice for him to look over and see me on the couch, usually watching The Office.

While I am feeling the exhaustion, there is still stuff to do around the house. Bottles need to be washed and sterilized, one last load of her laundry needs to be done, and there is the mildest hint of clutter that needs to be taken care of. Luckily (I guess) we have the time!

  • HOW FAR ALONG? 37 weeks and 2 days! Emily is close to 7lbs and is the size of a Doc Marten Boot! Where my 90’s kids at?!
  • DUE DATE? September 19th.
  • SIZE?: If everything matches what the doctor says, about 7lbs.
  • WEIGHT GAIN? This past week I have actually lost 2lbs, making my weight this week 162lbs. I’ve gained about 15lbs so far this pregnancy, and that includes all baby weight, placenta, uterus, and whatever fat I’ve gained myself. Losing weight is normal in the last few weeks of pregnancy as your water breaks and you pee more (like 3x per hour).
  • NAME? Emily Ruth Whiteley ❤
  • HOW AM I FEELING?: Exhausted. I had my first “real” contraction yesterday and that alone wiped me out for the evening. Emily has slowed down her movements, but they’ve also become stronger. She is stretching from Zimbabwe to Canada! I have to pee more often, and when I cough/laugh there is intense pressure on my cervix. Does this mean baby will come soon?? NOPE! Doctor confirmed we are still less than 1cm dilated with no effacement.
  • CRAVINGS?: Honestly none! I constantly want chocolate, despite the heartburn, but that is nothing new. I am currently heading up a CPK White Pizza. Am I gonna share with my husband? Probs not.
  • AVERSIONS?: Everything. Literally aside from chocolate, I am never “in the mood” for a certain food.
  • PHYSICAL CHANGES?: I have stretch marks appearing on my belly this past week!
  • BABY MOVEMENT?: She is still going strong. Her movements have become more like rolling around rather than sharp punches and kicks. She still finds a way to dig her foot into the far side of my uterus!
  • BELLY BUTTON?: Flat flat flat.
  • MOST EXCITED ABOUT?: Getting this baby out of me!
  • LEAST EXCITED ABOUT?: Getting this baby out of me.
I still can’t believe we are less than 3 weeks out from her due date. Fingers crossed she comes on time!!!

Stay Bump-to-Date! My 36 Week Bump-Date

36 Weeks Pregnant

We’ve made it to the final month of this pregnancy!

It has been such a whirlwind of a year. Becoming pregnant with our first child during a global pandemic was certainly not what we had in mind.

For those of you just joining, Connor and I found out we were pregnant in January of this year, about a month into the pregnancy. It was not planned, but we welcomed it with open arms… and an engagement! Good job to Connor on that one 😉 We were living in California, both still working at the time and I was enrolled in graduate school. Two months after we tested positive, the pandemic shut everything down. I lost my job at a local Equity theater, our school closed and resorted to remote learning, and we got the hell out of dodge. We packed up our life (and our cats) in 1 week and road tripped back to the East Coast. It was quite an adventure for being 3 months pregnant! We currently live in rural Connecticut in a lovely duplex, Connor has a wonderful job in Greenwich, and we are perfectly healthy. Again- not the pregnancy we had ever thought we would have!

Now, at 36 weeks pregnant, in the middle of the HOTTEST New England summer I think we’ve ever experienced, I am ready for baby girl to be OUT of me! We had our 36 week appointment with the OBGYN (Avery Center in Westport, CT) yesterday… and there is no end in sight. I am the sliiiiightest bit dilated- barely .5cm. While we all thought she was going to come early (me being a 5’2″ petite woman and Connor being a 5’11” large man), it looks like she is going to hold out until at least her due date. We were a little disappointed with that- we just want to meet her! Being pregnant has its ups and downs, but after a while you just get sick of being pregnant and want to be a parent.

I am excited to keep you updated in the weeks to come!

  • HOW FAR ALONG? 36 weeks and 3 days! It’s crazy how fast the time flies. Emily is about 6 pounds and is the size of a head of kale (ew) or a Buzz Lightyear action toy!
  • DUE DATE? September 19th
  • SIZE?: If everything matches what the doctor says, about 6.4lbs!
  • WEIGHT GAIN? EVERY woman’s experience in pregnancy is different. There is no right or wrong weight to be/gain during your pregnancy. Initially, I lost about 5-6 pounds in the first 2 months of pregnancy. This wasn’t due to morning sickness- that’s just how my body reacted to being pregnant! Weight gain also doesn’t mean gaining fat yourself- it’s the weight of your baby, your uterus, fluid, placenta, and so many other things in your body. Now that we are at the end, I have gained roughly 20 pounds (including the 5-6 back that I had lost). I will probably pack on another 4-6 before Emily arrives.
  • NAME? You all know this- Emily Ruth Whiteley! AKA Emmy Ruth, Emmy, Ruthie, Baby Girl, Emily, and whatever other nicknames we come up with! We’ve had this name picked out for about 2 years- ever since we began talking about having children together!
  • HOW AM I FEELING? Ehhhhh. Pregnancy has been kind to me overall, but it’s not something I particularly enjoyed. Right now, I am feeling tireddddd. It kills me to walk up and down the stairs- I feel like I need to take a nap as soon as I get to the landing! The muscles on my back (my Lats) have begun hurting from strain of the weight of my uterus pulling down. I have also had pretty bad Braxton Hicks (false contractions) for the past few weeks. I have begun feeling a small, sharp pain at the top of my uterus, which means it’s preparing to help me push out this baby!
  • CRAVINGS?: Throughout this pregnancy, I haven’t “craved” anything. There are moments where I will see a food in a TV show or a commercial and need to immediately eat it (the Cheese Puffs I made my husband pick up the other day). I constantly want chocolate or pizza, but honestly that’s nothing new!
  • AVERSIONS?: Burgers. I don’t know why- about a month ago I just couldn’t stomach eating burgers! Sometimes watching people eat also makes me a tad queasy.
  • PHYSICAL CHANGES?: My feet are definitely a little swollen. My normal 7.5 size shoe is a bit tight on me- I hope they go down since I just ordered some new fall booties!
  • BABY MOVEMENT?: They say that baby movement slows down during the last month of pregnancy- I have yet to notice that. Emily is rocking and rolling at all times of the day! Since this is my first pregnancy, my uterus and abdominal muscles are pretty tight, so her movements look like waves. They’re still big enough to be surprised with! She gets the hiccups about twice a day, sometimes more. She also loves stretching out and seeing how far her arms and legs can go!
  • BELLY BUTTON?: What a weird thing. My belly button stretched out- it never popped. But at times, depending on her position, you can grab it between your fingers.
  • MOST EXCITED ABOUT?: Not being pregnant anymore? Honestly, it’s been a great pregnancy but it is certainly not for me. I am truly excited about getting to hold our baby girl and watching her move outside of me rather than inside. I also can’t wait to see what color hair she has!
  • LEAST EXCITED ABOUT?: Honestly? Nothing. I am very much looking forward to this new chapter in our lives! It’s going to be tough as hell, but we have each other and we have the support of 5 incredible grandparents!

I am so excited for this baby to greet the world. Come back in the next few weeks as I talk about my labor and delivery plan (which can ALWAYS change in the moment)!

Check That Off! 7 Things You Need To Do In Your Third Trimester.

We are starting our 4th week in the third trimester, and my goodness there is still so much to do! In just a short 9 weeks, our baby girl will make her big appearance.

29 weeks pregnant!

For the past 31 weeks, I have been preparing (dreading) the last few months leading up to her birth. Are we prepared to have a baby? Do we have everything we need to sustain her life? Do I need to buy more underwear?

No. No. And probably no! But it doesn’t hurt to be 100% sure.

I have done my research and have created a checklist of the 7 most important things to do in your third trimester before your water breaks and all of a sudden you’re rushing to the hospital to deliver your first, third, or seventh child.

1. Create a Birth Plan

A birth plan is a helpful guideline for all mom-to-be’s, doctors, and hospital staff to have on hand during labor. When you get to the hospital, you’re not going to want to remember all of the little details of birth you feel so strongly about- nor can you remember! Your mind is going to be in a thousand other places while your body prepares to deliver a child.

Birth Plans go over details such as:

  1. Pain relief
  2. Episiotomy
  3. How you would like to breastfeed
  4. What medical procedures you would like performed on your child
  5. If you would like your child to stay in your room all of the time, some of the time, etc.

And more!

I found my birth plan template on TheBump.com! You can use this template, search the internet for another one that tickles your fancy, or you can create your own!

2. Put together the Nursery

Last weekend, my family and I spent time putting together all of the nursery furniture that Emily will need: Crib, changing table, and dresser. We got our furniture from Wayfair and put it together ourselves (our area doesn’t offer Handy services).

Getting the nursery ready early in the third trimester is extremely important, as you’re not going to want to build furniture or hang pictures when you’re worrying about your water breaking.

3. Choose a Pediatrician

This is something that most first-time parents may look over until the last minute. Choosing a pediatrician is something you should do at the beginning of your third trimester, as you will need to give the hospital your pediatricians name. We registered at The Center for Advanced Pediatrics in Connecticut! They have our name in the system, and all we do once Miss Emily is born is to call them to set up her first few appointments.

4. Clean! Clean! Clean!

Clean that house, mama!

This might seem like something that is insanely obvious, as I sit here writing this post instead of cleaning my own house, but cleaning the house doesn’t just mean vacuuming the carpet or cleaning the hair out of the shower drain.

When I say clean the house, I mean PURGE, BABY, PURGE! Take the time to Marie Kondo your kitchen, your study, your bedroom. In just a few short weeks you are going to have another human taking up space in your home, and you are not going to want to worry about where to keep his or her bottles while you’re on your way home from the hospital. Organize the nursery in a way that feels right to you. Get rid of the clutter thats been sitting in the corner of the living room for months. Enlist family or your spouse/partner to help as well! You are the one who has been building a baby for the past 8 months, after all!

5. Pre-Register at the Hospital

This is something that I didn’t even know was something you had to do!

Pre-registering at the hospital isn’t as scary as it sounds. This just insures that all of your personal and financial information is in the hospitals system for when you go into labor. You’re not going to want to fill out your insurance information while simultaneously pushing a baby out and screaming at your partner.

You want to pre-register between 27-30 weeks, right around the time you begin your third trimester. If something happens and you go into labor pre-term, you certainly want to make sure the hospital is prepared to take you in.

6. Pack your Hospital Bag. And your partners’. And your baby’s!

Don’t wait until the last minute to pack your hospital bag! This isn’t something you want to just throw together the second your water breaks. You want- and need- to plan what’s going in your bag ahead of time. If you get to the hospital and discover that you left your phone with the birth playlist at home, you’re going to be a tad upset (I’m looking at you, Pam!).

If you’re not quite ready to pack your hospital bag, at least create your packing list. This will help you when you reach your final few weeks of life without a baby and allow you to go through the list without thinking.

Hare are some important things to remember to pack:

  1. 2-3 outfits (nursing tops, socks, underwear, etc.)
  2. Breast pump (if you are planning on breastfeeding). You’re going to want the hospital to teach you how to use it!
  3. Going home outfit for your baby
  4. Overnight clothes for your partner (if they are planning on staying in the hospital overnight). Due to COVID-19, there is a chance that your partner will be allowed into the hospital room with you, but might not be able to come and go as they please. Pack for them like you’re packing for you!
  5. Toiletries (toothpaste, deodorant, face wash, shampoo)

7. Stock That Freezer

Once your baby comes, you’re not going to want to spend hours on your feet meal prepping and cooking. You’re going to need that extra time for laundry and sleeping.

Buy or create freezer meals that can be reheated at a moments notice… that notice being it’s lunchtime and your little one is out cold. Your handy dandy Crock-Pot can come in handy here! You can spend a week or two making 1-2 meals per day and then freeze them in meal prep containers for easy access. You can check out my recipe for Crock-Pot Pot Roast here!

There are many other things you can add to your third-trimester checklist- these are just the ones I’ve been working on in the past few weeks. I’m excited to check off the things on this list as I move through the next few weeks leading up to the birth of our sweet baby girl!
